Wire Closet Shelving — How To Plan Your Closet System

Wire closet shelving and closet organization systems are extremely popular, and it’s not hard to see why. More and more people are living in smaller spaces, and closets have become a vital area for storing a larger amount of stuff. Also, homeowners have realized that a neat and tidy closet is not only handy as it stores more, but is more pleasant to actually use…no more cramming piles of stuff into the closet, and then trying to keep people from ever opening the door!

So how can you create a closet that keeps things organized, and looks great too? Here’s how to do it.

1. Split up the closet space
Professional organizers and designers generally divide up closet space like this:
*50 percent for clothes that can be hung lower down (closer to the floor)
*25 percent for clothes that are long, and need to be hung higher up from the floor
*25 percent for wire closet shelving (drawers and/or shelves)

This is a good rule of thumb, but of course you can adjust these recommendations depending on your needs and what you need to store in the closet.

2. Keep essentials handy
Place anything that you need to use often, such as shoes, at eye level so you can avoid having to bend over to retrieve them.

3. Let there be light
If you have overhead lighting in your closet, put narrow items near the top of the closet and wider items farther down below them. In a clothes closet, hang pants on the top rod and use lower rods for things like jackets and shirts. Why? More light will get through, and you will have less ‘blind spots’ from shadows. If you do not have closet lighting, add some.

4. Move up
The area above the top shelf in your closet is often underused. Make the most of your vertical space by adding wire closet shelving here, and putting occasional or season items here. If this is too high for you to reach on your own, get a small step-stool and keep it nearby (or fold it and hang it in the closet, if you have room).

5. Check the door
Your closet door is, in effect, part of the wall of your closet, and you may have enough room there to use it for some storage. If you can, stand inside and check to see how much room you have there. You can use the back of the door to store many things, such as shoes, ties, scarves, hats, bags and belts. Use adhesive hooks, or wire closet shelving, racks or hooks that attach to the door or fit over the door itself. If you don;t have the room for storage there, consider hanging a full-length mirror on the back of the door.

Wire closet shelving is the perfect place to store many things. Folded sweaters or storage boxes fit easily on shelves, while wire baskets can be used for smaller items like tank tops, camisoles, or any smaller items that you want to tuck away rather than hang up. Use them properly, and you’ll soon have a closet that is easy to use, and looks great!
